The 6th HSG Forum for Banking and Finance on the topic "Private Markets: The New Asset Class?" was held on November 14, 2024, at the Zunfthaus zur Saffran in Zurich. The HSG Forum brings together experts and interested parties from the financial industry to discuss current developments and research findings. In collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance (s/bf-HSG), the forum offers unique expertise. With Prof. Dr. Tereza Tykvova's thematic introduction, the keynote speech by Stefan Näf from Partners Group, and the practice panel discussion led by Prof. Dr. Stefan Weik, opportunities and challenges of investing in private markets are examined, particularly from the perspective of retail investors.

The Corporate Venturing Lab was initiated as a joint initiative between the Chair of Entrepreneurship (ITEM) and the Center for Financial Services Innovation (FSI-HSG). The purpose of the lab is to generate evidence-based insights and effectively facilitate knowledge transfer between academia and practice in the field of corporate venturing. Prof. Dr. Petrit Ademi (FSI-HSG) and Prof. Dr. Dietmar Grichnik (ITEM-HSG) will serve as the Co-Leads of the lab.

Prof. Dr. Petrit Ademi was in the co-organizing team for the UBS x HSG Co-Creation Day, which was held successfully on October 8, 2024, where he also held an input speech on “Corporate Start up Collaborations”. Under the guidance of UBS and HSG mentors, student groups developed solution ideas for four UBS use cases (Kids & Teen Banking, Super App, Digital Twin, and Sustainability). Prospective solutions were pitched by the student groups and a winning team was selected by the Jury. More information: UBS Co-Creation Days | SQUARE | Universität St.Gallen. A summary video is in preparation and will be published soon.

Prof. Dr. Markus Schmid and his team released the “Retail Banking Study 2035” jointly with EY Switzerland summarising the assessments of 33 retail banks on ten key theses about the future of retail banking in 2035.

Research in the Spotlight

On the quality of cryptocurrency markets: Centralized versus decentralized exchanges

We analyze the market quality of centralized crypto exchanges (CEXs) and
decentralized blockchain-based venues (DEXs) using a unique and comprehensive
dataset. Focusing on two fundamental aspects, transaction costs and deviations
from the no-arbitrage condition, we estimate the causal effect of “gas fees” on
DEX market quality. We show that these fixed costs impose a significant burden
on relatively small trades and cause persistent arbitrage deviations. Conversely,
DEXs offer more competitive transaction costs for larger trades, offering a more
favorable environment for institutional investors. Furthermore, we provide causal
evidence that innovations aimed at enhancing the flexibility of liquidity provision
in DEX markets lead to sizeable improvements in market quality.

Detecting asset price bubbles using deep learning

In this paper, we employ deep learning techniques to detect financial asset bubbles by using observed call option prices. The proposed algorithm is widely applicable and model-independent. We test the accuracy of our methodology in numerical experiments within a wide range of models and apply it to market data of tech stocks in order to assess if asset price bubbles are present. Under a given condition on the pricing of call options under asset price bubbles, we are able to provide a theoretical foundation of our approach for positive and continuous stochastic asset price processes. When such a condition is not satisfied, we focus on local volatility models. To this purpose, we give a new necessary and sufficient condition for a process with time-dependent local volatility function to be a strict local martingale.

Ask BERT: How Regulatory Disclosure of Transition and Physical Climate Risks Affects the CDS Term Structure

We use BERT, an AI-based algorithm for language understanding, to quantify regulatory climate risk disclosures and analyze their impact on the term structure in the credit default swap (CDS) market. Risk disclosures can either increase or decrease CDS spreads, depending on whether the disclosure reveals new risks or reduces uncertainty. Training BERT to differentiate between transition and physical climate risks, we find that disclosing transition risks increases CDS spreads after the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015, while disclosing physical risks decreases the spreads. In addition, we also find that the election of Trump had a negative impact on CDS spreads for firms exposed to transition risk. These impacts are consistent with theoretical predictions and economically and statistically significant.

Verfügt die FINMA über genügend wirksame und scharfe Instrumente gegen (höchste) Bankmanager?

In March 2023, Crédit Suisse (CS) had to be taken over by UBS. It was the first global systemically important bank to face imminent resolution since the financial crisis of
2007–2008. Unlike UBS in 2008, CS remained well capitalized until the end. But clients had lost confidence in the bank’s management. This led to a bank run and thus to  the bank’s demise. The ongoing crisis of specialist and  regional banks in the United States accelerated this further. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority
FINMA is now being criticized for not taking sufficiently assertive measures against the bank’s management. A questionable culture had long prevailed at CS in particular, supervisory law had been seriously violated and yet not much had been done against the bank managers. However, the following questions arise not only at CS, but
also at other banks: Does FINMA currently have sufficiently effective and stringent measures against (top) bank managers? What, if anything, should be changed?
